Saposhnikoviae Radix (防风) is the dried root of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schische, family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae).

Long conical or long cylindrical, slightly tortuous. External greyish-brown, rugged, with longitudinal wrinkles, numerous transverse elongated lenticel-like protrudings and dotted raised rootlet scars. Root stock with obvious dense annulations, some annulations marked by brown hair-like remains of leaf bases. Texture light, easily broken, fracture uneven, bark brownish-yellow and cracked, Wood yellow. Odor, characteristic; taste, slightly sweet.
Important cultivation area
Northeast of China and East part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Eliminate foreign matters, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thick slices, and dry.
Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Pungent and sweet; slightly warm.
Enter urinary bladder, liver and spleen channels. Dispel wind to release the exterior pattern, dispel dampness and relieve pain, arrest convulsions.
Usage and dosage
5-10 g, decoction for oral use.
