Crotonis Fructus (巴豆) is the dried ripe fruit of Croton tiglium L., family Euphorbiaceae.

Macroscopic character
Ovoid, usually 3-ribbed. External greyish-yellow, rough, with 6 longitudinal lines, apex truncate, base with a fruit stalk scar, on opening shell, 3 loculi in the shell each containing 1 seed. Seed slightly flattened-elliptical, external brown or greyish-brown, kernels yellowish-white, oily. Odor, slight; taste, pungent.
Important cultivation area
Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou provinces.
Processing method
Remove the coats to take the kernels.
Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Pungent; highly toxic; hot. Enter stomach and large intestine channels. Topical application; to heal wounds.
Usage and dosage
Appropriate amount for topical application, ground into powder for applying to pars affecta, or mashed and wraped by cloth for rubbing the pars affecta.

Contraindicated for pregnant woman. Incompatible with Qianniuzi.
