Psoraleae Fructus (补骨脂) is the dried ripe fruit of Psoralea corylifolia L., family  Fabaceae

Other name    
Buguzhi (Chinese name), Malaytea Scurfpea Fruit

Macroscopic character
Reniform, slightly flat. External black, with fine reticulate wrinkles. Apex obtuse, with a small protrusion, concave side showing a scar of fruit stalk, and oily. Odor, aromatic; taste, pungent and slightly bitter.



Important cultivation area
Henan, Sichuan and Anhui provinces.

Processing method
1. Buguzi : Remove foreign matters.
2. Yanbuguzi : Mix Buguzi with brine (use 2 kg of salt for 100 kg of Buguzhi), stir-fry on a gentle fire until slightly inflated and fragrance, allow to cool.

Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Pungent and bitter; warm. Enter kidney and spleen channels.
1. Buguzi : Warm kidney-yang, arrest qi, relieve asthma, warm spleen and relieve diarrhea. Use externally to expel wind and relieve rashes.
2. Yanbuguzi : Stir-fry with brine guides the action downward to the kidney channel. Nourishing kidney-yang, arrest qi into kidney, relieve diarrhea.

Usage and dosage 
6-10 g, decoction for oral use; 20-30% tincture, for external use.

* Contraindication and precaution *
Contraindicated in patient with constipation caused by yin-deficiency due to excessive fire.
