Poria

Poria (茯苓)  is the dried sclerotium of the fungus, Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf, family Polyporaceae.

Indian bread, Pong-Rak-Son (Thai Name), Fuling (Chinese Name)

Macroscopic character

Fulingge: Subglobose, ellipsoid, oblate or irregular-shaped. Skin thin and rough, brown to blackish-brown, conspicuously shriveled and striated. Texture hard and compact, fracture granular, some cracked, outer part pale brown, inner part white. Odor, slight; taste, bland and sticky when chewed.

Fulingkuai (peeled and cubic Poria): Cubic pieces or cubic thick slices, varying in thickness. White, pale red or pale brown.

Fulingpian (peeled and sliced Poria): Irregular thick slices. White, pale red or pale brown.

Important cultivation area

Yunnan, Hubei, Anhui and Guizhou provinces. 

Processing method
Soak Fulingge in water until soften, wash clean and steam briefly, peeling, cut into cubics or thick slices, and dry.


Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Sweet, bland; neutral. Enter heart, lung, spleen and kidney channels. Promote urination to drain dampness, nourishing the spleen, and calm the heart.

10-15 g, decoction for oral use.
