Arecae Pericarpium (大腹皮) is the dried unripen pericarp of Areca catechu L., family Arecaceae (Palmae).

Elliptical or long-ovate gourd-shaped. Epicarp deep brown to blackish, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles and raised transverse lines on the surface; style scars at apex and fruit stalk and remains of calyx at the base. Endocarp dented, brown or deep brown, smooth and hard shell-shaped. Mesocarp fibers visible when broken longitudinally. Texture light and hard. Odor, slight; taste, slightly astringent.
Important cultivation area
Hainan, Yunnan and Fujian provinces.
Eliminate foreign matters, wash clean, cut into pieces, and dry.
Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Pungent, slightly warm. Enter spleen, stomach, large intestine and small intestine. Move qi, soothe the middle, move water and alleviate edema.
Usage and dosage
5-10 g, decoction for oral use.
