Amomi Rotundus Fructus (白豆蔻) is the dried ripe fruit of Amomum kravanh Pierre ex Gagnep. or A. compactum Soland ex Maton, family Zingiberaceae.

Macroscopic character
Yuandoukou (Protogenic Round Cardamon Fruit; A. kravanh): Subspheroidal, external yellowish-white to pale yellowish-brown, apex possessing a prominent stylopodium, base with a scar of fruit stalk, both ends bearing pale brown pubescences. Texture of pericarp light and brittle, easily broken longitudinally, 3 loculi, each containing about 10 seeds. Odor, aromatic; taste, pungent and cool, slightly camphor-like.
Yinnibaikou (Indonesian Round Cardamon Fruit; A. compactum): Relatively small, externally yellowish-white, sometimes slightly purplish-brown, testa relatively thin, seeds thin and blighted. Odor, relatively weak.
Important cultivation area
Yuandoukou : Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam; Yunnan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.
Yinnibaikou : Indonesia; Hainan and Yunnan provinces.
Processing method
Eliminate foreign matters and fruit stalk, sift out fragments.
Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Pungent; warm. Enter lung, spleen and stomach channels. Resolve dampness and move qi, warm zhongjiao to stop vomiting, increase appetite and promote digestion.
Thai Traditional Medicine action
Krawan (A. kravanh): Pungent, aromatic. Carminative, Dhatu-tonic, anti-nausea, anti-vomitting, expectorant, invigorate blood and wind element.
Usage and dosage
3-6 g, decoction for oral use. Crush before use. Add when the decoction is nearly done.
