Smilacis Chinae Rhizoma (菝葜) is the dried rhizome of Smilax china L., family Smilacaceae.

Macroscopic character
Irregular pieces with knob-like outgrowths, stiff spinous remains of fibrous roots or radicels. Fracture brownish-yellow or reddish-brown, with dotted vascular bundles and numerous small bright spots. Odor, slightly; taste, slightly bitter and astringent.
Important cultivation area
Zhejiang, Jiangxu and Guangxi provinces.
Processing method
Eliminate foreign matters, wash clean, wait until thoroughly soften, cut into slices and dry.
Traditional Chinese Medicine action
Sweet, astringent, slightly bitter; neutral. Enter liver and kidney channels. Drain dampness and turbidity, dispel wind and relieveimpediment, remove toxin and dissipate stasis.
Thai Traditional Medicine action
Khaao-yen-nuea (dried rhizome of S. corbularia Kunth) and Khaao-yen-tai (dried rhizome of S. glabra Roxb.): Related crude drugs to Smilacis Chinae Rhizoma. Oily taste, brackish and slightly sweet; used for exanthematous fevers, yaws, oozing eczema due to lymphatic disorders, disorders of tendomyopathy and urination, abscesses, furuncles, pruritic rash, diseases of bones, internal inflammation.
Usage and dosage
10-15 g, decoction for oral use.
